I live- still, barely. No words of wisdom here. This is probably going to become a lurking account, and I'm cool with that. /wave at sister_coyote! |

| | Green Day- Are We The Waiting | ] | Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all! It is, as Kent Brockman says, "The one day a year when everybody's a little Irish! Except, of course, for the gays and the Italians." I met my brother (herein after referred to as "E") and a few of his college friends downtown for drinking and darts. We found a little out of the way neighborhood bar, away from the main craziness. It looked like every drunken frat boy within a three-state radius had congregated in Canton to wear green hats and booze it up. Adjourned after a few rounds (and after Maryland lost! Totally blows!) to Little Italy which, natch, was quiet and pleasant. E, bless him, had to wander around these nice little Italian places wearing his kelly-green corduroy blazer. He played it cool. I now have a box of penne and an entire apple Napoleon lurking in my fridge. Heading down to the folks' place tomorrow for corned beef, cabbage, and new potatoes. We'll probably also watch The Quiet Man, like we do every year. Pick it up if you've got time- it's a 1950s John Ford Western set in Ireland, with John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, a climactic fifteen-minute fight scene, and more quotable lines than you can shake a shillalegh at. |

| | Making Love- Utada Hikaru | ] | I was at work late last Friday, prepared to have a pleasant (if unexciting) weekend, when I got an email from U Berkeley. The attachment graciously informed me that they would be unable to offer me a spot in their program for this fall. What was in the mail when I got home? A similar letter from U Washington. For those of you keeping score at home, that's three out of four grad school refusals. I also haven't heard from Chicago, whose website informs applicants that they will begin getting in touch with selected students "around February 1st". As a result, I've spent much of the past ten days in a gentle funk. I have plans to reapply next year- after taking additional courses (thank you, free tuition, now I know why I work for a university), but still. Sucks. I'm sure I'll feel more optimistic in a few days, but right now it feels like it's been February- cold, gray, icy February- forever. |

| | Ready Steady Go- L'Arc en Ciel | ] | /yawn It's past time for bed here. Just a brief update: U Berkeley will apparently be contacting folks for interviews through the 26th, then they'll start sending out denial letters the 29th. Chicago starts contacting folks for interviews February 1st; Washington has told me late February "if not sooner". If you have spare karma around your place, please send some my way. |

| | Razor (Live): Foo Fighters | ] | (I think I may make it a habit to title my posts with various nonsensical utterances. Just like real life!) So here was yesterday in a nutshell: I got into work a little early so I could head out early to pick up my copy of The Burning Crusade, then spent much of the drive back home giggling maniacally to myself and scanning the manual at stoplights. (Not safe driving practices, kids!) I got home to find a letter from University of Wisconsin-Madison- one of the four places I applied for grad school. Basically, it said "Thanks, but no thanks". I've spent most of today being kind of bummed about it (not having anything to do at work is bad for the soul). Then I realized- hey, what are the chances that such bad news arrives on the one night I'm too giddy to really care? Well timed, Madison. (I still kind of hate you guys, though.) Assorted notes: First of all, Burning Crusade rocks super-hard- I spent last night playing a Draenei mage and tonight I'm going to start two Blood Elves on my main server, if it ever lets me on. Not so cool: the concentration of schmucks who have come out of the woodwork to broadcast their opinions over general chat. Imagine a mud fight at a middle school and you're getting there. Also: what in God's name is up with the Draenei accents? There's some weird combination of Italian and Brooklynese going on there. |

| | Ironforge: Theme from World of Warcraft | ] | Grad school applications are done! /whooo Now it's time to fret over my inbox until someone (please please please) writes me back for an interview. In the meantime, I am having a blast with my new iPod (thank you, Mom and Dad and Santa) and the piles of iTunes giftcards I got for Christmas. Actually, what I'm really having fun doing is managing the songs on my iPod, putting little labels on them, and scrounging up appropriate album art for the files that are missing it. It's good to be a nerd. |

| | angry | ] | Dear boss-man: I am very happy that you agreed to write recommendations for me. I appreciate that you're very busy, what with the big boss leaving on a trip for India, holidays starting, and you having a month-old baby at home. I cannot help but notice, however, that the deadline for two of my applications have passed, and you haven't submitted your letter of recommendation for at least one of them (the one I could confirm online). Please, please, PLEASE have mailed it in, or something silly like that. Please don't have let this slide. Because if you have, and either school gives me crap about it, I am going to be extremely pissed off. I will probably be tempted to punch you very hard, right in the face- particularly since I have been working very hard for you for the past few months. (I won't, because I like my job, but I will be thinking very seriously about it.) I will swear at you a great deal! And then I might want to kick you in the groin. And then in the face again a few times. Just a friendly reminder! Love, Mer |
